Gram Parsons gick tragiskt bort 1973 av en överdos av droger och alkohol. Gram Parsons och Emmylou Harris hade fått en nära relation i och med turnerande samt genom arbetet med albumen "GP" och "Grievous Angel" som i princip var färdigt när Gram dog och som släpptes efter hans död. Gram hade på många sätt fungerat som en mentor för den då 26-åriga Emmylou och det tog lång tid för henne att bearbeta sorgen. Låten Emmylou Harris – Boulder To Birmingham (som senare blivit en signaturlåt för Emmylou) handlar om hennes saknad efter Gram.
